I photograph plants & gardens professionally, my images having appeared in numerous books, calendars & magazine articles. Invariably, these images are compositionally balanced & calm… plants out of all context except as examples of the beauty of nature or the gardener’s art.

But I feel that the earth on which we stand, human industrial culture, the whole goddam universe is a dynamic, active maelstrom . Plants aren’t static bystanders to this. They’re fighting to set themselves off against the other elements, to physically & (if this isn’t too mystical) esthetically evolve.

Therefore, for this project, I’ve photographed plants against other elements ranging from graffiti to industrial structures to the Universe as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope in hopes of producing a sense of a dynamic process & to push the boundaries of nature /  horticultural photography.

All images are shot on film without digital manipulation.
