Biography / Résumé
I am a San Francisco based artist/photographer, educated at City College of San Francisco, Columbia University & San Francisco Art Institute.
As a horticultural photographer I created plant & garden images…examples of the beauty of nature or of the gardener’s art. I did three books as solo photographer & have images in many other books & magazines.
I was an Instructor of photography at UC Berkeley for 21 years.
My personal (fine art) photography explores the medium in a number of directions:
- Trying to present documentary material through the prism of contemporary art.
- Focusing on the nexus between the directness of photography & the complexity of painting.
- Expanding the photographic palette by integrating the images with other mediums including painting, mixed media, written essays & video.
- Exploring the issues that separate photography as a craft from those factors that make us perceive a piece as fine art.
I’ve been an active member of the San Francisco photographic community; at different times been involved with Camerawork, Media Alliance & Eye Gallery for which I curated well-received photographic shows
I have exhibited in California & New York, in both solo shows & group exhibitions. I have work in the collection of the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.
